Box Score Potsdam, N.Y. - Led by Mallory Costello, the Spartans mowed down the hosting Potsdam St. Bears, downing the home team 4-1 and capturing the Collegiate Village Cup on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Maxcy Turf Stadium.
Costello was named Tournament MVP after netting a pair of goals in each tournament game, including two game-winners. The forward was joined on the All-Tournament Team by freshman defender Nicole Gay who helped the Spartans to a clean sheet in their first round game against Becker and kept the Bears off the board for 87:04 in the championship contest.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to break the Bears, as they came out firing on all cylinders. Just 43 seconds into the contest, Costello found the back of the net off a pass from Nicole Wershoven to give Castleton the early advantage. The sophomore forward notched a second tally just 6:51 later, beating Bears keeper Michaela Cole, ripping the side netting with a bullet of a shot.
Later in the first half, Morgan Young got in on the act, lofting a 20-yard shot over the keeper and into the net. The freshman midfielder's tally gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead, which they took into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Spartans continued to control the pace of the game, providing constant pressure to the Bears' defense. Castleton outshot Potsdam St. 21-6, and had six corner kicks to the Bears' two. It wasn't until the 52nd minute that the Spartans added onto their advantage. Jenna Bostwick found a streaking Dominique Valacius with a perfect through ball that Valacius corraled and put into the back of the net, making it 4-0.
Castleton held their four-goal advantage until the 87th minute, when Postdam St. attacker Alexis Beach slotted a ball past Jessica Binkowski, snapping the Spartans' 177:04 streak without conceding a score. The score was nothing more than a consolation, as Castleton went on to win 4-1 and claim the Collegiate Village Cup Title.
The Spartans improve to 2-0 and will return to Castleton on Sept. 7 to host Simmons in the first round of the Rutland Herald Invitational. Skidmore and UMass-Boston will compete in the other semifinal contest.
