Maine-Farmington Earns a Split with Castleton

Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in the second game of their doubleheader on Friday afternoon, falling to the University of Maine at Farmington 10-1 following an 8-2 victory in the day's opening game. 

Castleton recorded a season-high four errors in the nightcap as the team moved to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the North Atlantic Conference The Beavers, meanwhile, improved to 2-7 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. 

Derek Osborne was strong in the opener, earning his second win by allowing just four hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out a batter. Cameron Curler helped him out at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Kyle O'Brey went 2-for-3 in the second game with the team's lone RBI. 

In the bottom of the first UMF got its offense going off Osborne. The sophomore gave up a leadoff walk to Dale Winchenbach, and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then third on a fly out to right field. Matthew Woodbury drove home Winchenbach for the 1-0 lead, but Osborne induced a groundout to end the frame. 

Osborne settled down and faced the minimum over the next two innings, though the Spartans offense was unable to get anything going. 

Castleton broke through in the fourth as Joe Borowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the fourth. Conner Hoagland singled and Macyn Clifford laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Matt McNamee loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and Cameron Curler came through with a run-scoring single to tie the game. Tyler Hoare followed with an RBI single to short for the 2-1 lead and two more runs came around on an error by Brett Wallingford at second on Mat Pause's hit. 

The Spartans maintained their 4-1 lead until the sixth, when they added two more. Clifford was hit by a pitch and advanced all the way to third on a steal and a wild pitch. McNamee hit a sacrifice fly for the 5-1 advantage and Castleton scored another run on a Tyler Lord single. 

In the top of the seventh two more runs crossed the plate, one on an RBI single by Curler, and one batter later Clifford scored on an attempted steal by Curler. 

Osborne allowed just a single unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, and he induced a fly out with runners on second and third to avoid further damage and earn the 8-2 victory. 

Ethan Hanson took the ball for Castleton in the nightcap. After the Spartans failed to score in the top of the first, the sophomore gave up a single to lead off the bottom of the frame. He struck out two of the next three batters, but a wild pitch and error by Curler at shortstop allowed Colin Mello and Winchenbach to cross the plate for the 2-0 lead. 

UMF added to its lead in the third with consecutive one-out doubles by Jenkins and Mello. Two batters later the Beavers plated another run on an single to center by McCrossin. Jean then laid down a bunt down the first-base line to scored Woodbury from third and give UMF a 5-0 advantage. 

The Castleton bats finally showed some life in the top of the fourth. Nate Swahn and Curler drew back-to-back one-out walks and O'Brey singled home Swahn to make it 5-1. Chaz Millet was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the scoring threat. 

After a silent fourth, the Beavers came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Woodbury reached on an error and following a single, scored on another error to put UMF up 6-1. A sacrifice fly and a double scored two more runs, and the Beavers added their final run of the inning on an error by the Hoagland at third. 

Castleton was unable to score in the top of the sixth or the seventh and the Beavers tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-1 final. 

Ben Pearson went 6.0 innings to earn the win for UMF, walking four but striking out seven batters. Hanson look the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowed nine runs, six earned while striking out four. Brendan Mayhew let in a run on three hits in 1.0 inning of action. 

The Spartans and Beavers return for another doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 am.
