Box Score 2 Plattsburgh, N.Y. - Castleton jumped out to early leads in both games but dropped a pair of tight games to Plattsburgh State, falling 11-10 and 5-4 against the Cardinals on Sunday, Apr. 28.
Cameron Curler and Allen White each went 3-for-5 in the first game, while Mat Pause went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Joe Borowski and Macyn Clifford each drove in two runs.
In game one, the Spartans struck with three runs in the first inning. Borowski drove in Ryan Zielinksi on a single of the up middle for the 1-0 lead and two batters later Matt McNamee singled to put two runners on for Macyn Clifford. Clifford scored both runners on a single to centerfield.
Plattsburgh responded in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs with just one out for the 5-3 advantage. The Cardinals added single runs in the second and third to extend their lead to 7-3.
Castleton came alive in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. One run scored on a fielding error and Zielinksi then scored Cameron Curler on a groundout to make it 7-5. Borowski followed with a single on which both Tyler Lord and Mat Pause crossed the plate, tying the game seven apiece.
The Spartans added a run one inning late to take the lead, though it was short live as Plattsburgh came back with three in the bottom of the fifth for the 10-8 advantage.
Pause closed the game to one run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh and one inning later Allen White drove home pinch runner Brian Martin to tie the game.
Castleton was unable to score in the top of the ninth and the Cardinals used some small ball to drive home the winning run for the walk-off victory.
Nate Swahn took the loss as he wen the final 3.1 innings and allowed the single earned run while striking out two. Matt Ravey wen the first 5.0 innings, giving up seven earned runs with one strikeout.
In the second game, Castleton jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring one run in the first and three more in the second. Dan Errico drove in Greg Vreeland with an RBI single in the first to put the visitors up 1-0. In the second, Kyle O'Brey drove in a run on a groundout to make it 2-0. A Plattsburgh error allowed Taylor Vile to come into score, and Macyn Clifford ripped an RBI single to put the Spartans up 4-0.
The Cardinals came storming back, scoring five unanswered runs to earn the lead. Mike Mulvihill cranked a solo home run and a two-run double, while Jimmy Rosario and Mat Chavez each knocked RBI singles to put the home team up 5-4.
Rafael Ponce earned the win for the Cardinals, tossing two scoreless innings. Ethan Macura suffered the loss for the Spartans, allowing two runs (one earned) in an inning of work. Tim Smith got the start, going five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits.
Castleton falls to 25-11 on the season, and will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 30 when they host Wentworth at 4 p.m.
