Box Score 2 Bangor, Maine - In their second day of a four-game series, Castleton split its second doubleheader with Husson, winning game one 7-4 and dropping game two 4-2, taking three of four games from the Eagles this weekend.
Tyler Lord turned in another superb performance from the plate, going 4-for-7 on the day, making him 9-for-16 over the four-game weekend slate. Macyn Clifford notched three hits in six at-bats and scored two runs.
Adam Greenlese turned in a solid performance from the mound in game one, improving his record on the season to a perfect 6-0. The junior allowed four earned runs on ten hits, striking out two, lifting the Spartans to a 7-4 victory.
The Spartans earned their first runs in the top of the second inning, when Clifford led off the frame with a single. After moving forward on a groundout, the outfielder came around to score on consecutive wild pitches, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Cameron Curler and Mat Pause drew back-to-back walks and Lord singled to left before Ryan Zielinski stepped up to hit a two-run single, putting Castleton up 3-0.
The Eagles finally got to Greenlese in the bottom of the third inning, bringing home a pair of runs. Andrew Curran and Cody McInnis led off the inning with singles to put runners on first and third. Dylan Foster brought home a run with a groundout, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Shawn Smith to cut the Spartans' lead to 3-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans broke the game open, putting up four runs in the frame to go ahead 7-2. Three singles, a walk, and a pair of costly errors led to the Spartan rally, giving Greenlese a comfortable cushion late in the game.
The Eagles went on to score single runs in the bottom half of the sixth and the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Greenlese and the Spartans held on for the 7-4 victory.
In game two, the Spartans turned to senior Patrick Riley on the bump. The hurler threw a solid game, allowing just four earned runs on six hits and earning two punchouts, but didn't get the run support he needed. The Castleton offense sputtered, scoring only two runs off of Eagles pitcher Dan Whitney.
Castleton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ryan Zielinski singled into left, stole second, and advanced to third when the throw went into center field. Joe Borowski brought him home with a groundout to second base to give the Spartans the lead.
Riley cruised through the first inning before running into some trouble in the bottom of the second. The Eagles strung together a hit batsman, a walk, and four hits, including a three-run triple by Pat Thibodeau, to bring home four runs in the frame, going up 4-1.
Both pitchers cruised the rest of the way, with the score staying at 4-1 until the top of the seventh inning. In a last bid to tie the game, Borowski led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Clifford rocked a double to right-center to bring the tying run to the plate. Dan Errico drove in his first run of the year on a groundout to third, making the score 4-2, but the Spartans couldn't cash in any more than that, taking the loss.
With the split, Castleton moves to 15-7 on the year, including a 12-2 mark against conference opponents. The squad will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 16 when they host Lyndon St. in a conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
