Box Score 2 Bangor, Maine - The Spartans needed extra innings in both games to complete a sweep of North Atlantic Conference rival Husson, beating the Eagles 6-2 in game one and 5-3 in game two on Saturday in Bangor.
Senior Ryan Zielinski crossed a special milestone in game one, becoming the first in Spartan history to reach 200 hits in his career. The second baseman had already eclipsed the program record earlier this year, but with his leadoff single in the top of the eighth inning, Zielinski became the inaugural member of the 200-hit club at Castleton.
Castleton received a pair of outstanding outings from starting pitchers Conner Johnson and Derek Osborne and a total of three scoreless relief innings from Matt Ravey over the two games to seal the team's victories.
Johnson started game one, going seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven scattered hits. The freshman struck out two batters before being relieved by Ravey, who pitched a perfect eighth inning to shut down the Eagles and seal the Spartans 6-2 win.
In game two, Osborne tossed nine innings, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits. The hurler struck out three in his outing. Ravey came in to begin the tenth inning, and pitched two innings, allowing just one hit to earn the win.
Game one began with a rocky start for freshman pitcher Conner Johnson. Over the first two innings, he allowed two runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batsman, but settled in to pitch five scoreless innings after that.
In the top of the third, Castleton cashed in with two runs to tie the game. Mat Pause walked before a Tyler Lord double put runners on second and third with one out. Zielinski ripped a single to right field to drive in a run, and after a walk to Joe Borowski, Connor Hoagland ripped a single that drove in Lord to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team was able to score until the Spartans drove home four runs in the top of the eighth. Castleton strung together three hits, three walks, and a costly Husson error to bring home four runs to take a 6-2 lead in the extra frame. Matt Ravey entered to shut the door on the Eagles, recording three straight outs.
In game two, the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the top of the 2nd inning and 5th inning, before allowing three runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the 6th, Macyn Clifford ripped a deep fly ball out to left-center, driving in Connor Hoagland who tagged up from third and scored on the play to tie the game.
It took Castleton until the top of the 11th inning to break the 3-3 tie. Matt McNamee led off the inning with a single, but was taken out in favor of the speedy Brian Martin. The pinch runner Martin advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a Nate Swahn single. Cameron Curler stepped to the plate, earning a walk. The fourth ball squirted past Husson catcher Jordan Carter to the backstop, allowing Martin to score from third to put the Spartans ahead. The squad added an insurance run when Lord drove in Swahn with a single.
With the sweep, the Spartans improve to 14-6 overall and 11-1 in the NAC. They will take on Husson again on Sunday, Apr. 14 in a second doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
