Box Score 2 Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans got some timely hitting in both games, as well a pair of solid pitching performances to sweep Colby-Sawyer in a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, winning 4-1 and 3-1.
It was a battle of pitching both games and Castleton proved stronger with the duo of Adam Greenlese and Patrick Riley. Greenlese was impressive in the first game, allowing just three hits over 7.0 innings while striking out five and allowing two walks for his third win of the year. Riley was his equal in the nightcap, going 7.0 innings and giving up an unearned while striking out three and walking a single batter.
At the plate, Tyler Lord went 4-for-7 with three RBI while team toted 15 hits on the afternoon. For Colby-Sawyer, Andy Lapple went 3-for-6, earning half of the team's six hits on the day. Kevin Keith took the loss in the first game, going 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out eight. PJ Singster started the second game and went 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out one batter.
In the opener, Castleton got on the board in the second inning. Joe Borowski led off with a walk and after a fly out and strikeout, Allen White singled to put runners on the corners. Lord drove both runners home with a single to left for the 2-0 lead.
One inning later, Ryan Zielinski reached first on a one-out throwing error by the third baseman. He advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single down the right field line by Conner Hoagland.
The Spartans struck again in the fourth inning as Macyn Clifford led off with a double. McNamee followed with a bunt single and two batters later Lord doubled to right, scoring Clifford for the 4-0 lead. Pause walked to load the bases, but back-to-back outs ended the threat.
Colby-Sawyer made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh as Tyler Stotz was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Andy Lapple drove him home with an RBI double; however, he was stranded as Greenlese recorded the final three outs without allowing another run.
In the second game the Castleton offense once again got off to a strong start, scoring in the bottom of the first. Zielinski was hit with one out and two batters later Borowski drove him in on a double for the 1-0 lead.
The Chargers countered in the top of the second. Alex Fredette earned a leadoff walk and the reached second on a throwing error by Riley after a bunt back to the mound. Jeff Dunn bunted both runners over and a single by Kyle Greenwood tied the score 1-1.
It remained knotted 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Dan Errico led off with a single and Cameron Curler then bunted pinch runner Brian Martin over to second. Nate Swahn followed with a single to put runners on the corners and Chaz Millett sent a ball deep to center field for the sacrifice fly, scoring Martin. Back-to-back singles by Lord and Zielinski pushed the Castleton lead to 3-1.
Riley then sent the last six Chargers down in order to secure the win. The Spartans improve to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference with the sweep while Colby-Sawyer drops to 5-7 and 0-2 in the NAC.
Castleton returns to action on Monday when they host Norwich for a 3:30 pm game.
