New London, N.H. - The Spartans split a pair of pitching duels on Sunday against Coast Guard Academy, beating the Bears 1-0 in the first game and losing the second 1-0.

In game one, Adam Greenlese (2-0, 1.29 ERA) tossed seven innings to lead Castleton to victory. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out four. The Spartans only run came in the top of the final inning, and Greenlese shut down the Bears in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with a strikeout.

The Spartans got only five hits in the game, including three in the top of the 7th to manufacture their only run. Connor Hoagland finished the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kyle Wood tossed 6.1 innings for Coast Guard Academy, allowing five hits and one earned run to take the loss.

Coast Guard threatened in the bottom of the first frame, beginning the inning with back-to-back singles. Greenlese was able to escape the jam though, retiring the next three batters in order. After that, the junior settled down after that, throwing six innings of no-hit baseball.

In the top of the seventh, Cameron Curler led off the inning with a single to the deep hole at shortstop. Hoagland followed with a single to left field, and after a fielder's choice, Matt McNamee singled to load the bases. With the sacks full, Macyn Clifford ripped a deep fly to center field off of reliever Curt Barrett. The sacrifice fly scored Hoagland from third giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead that would hold to be the final score.

In game two, Patrick Riley (0-2, 5.02 ERA) threw eight scoreless innings allowing five hits before surrendering a run in the bottom of the ninth to take the loss for the Spartans. Allen White went 1-for-1 with two walks while Joe Borowski went 2-for-4 in the game.

Castleton was limited to just four hits on the day as Tyler Vieira shut down the Spartan offense. The Coast Guard pitcher threw nine scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and two walks while ringing up two strikeouts.

The Spartans made a bid for a run in the top of the fourth inning after a Ryan Zielinski double. Cameron Curler advanced Zielinski to third base with a groundout. With the infield in, Hoagland ripped a hard grounder to the second baseman, who cut Zielinski down at the plate to prevent the Spartans from scoring.

In the bottom of the ninth, centerfielder Ed Sella ripped a double to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a wild pitch by Riley. The next batter, Cameron Carroll, drove the winning run in with a sacrifice fly to deep center. The Spartans fell 1-0 in the final frame.

With the split decision, the Spartans move to 2-3 on the year, and will face Union College on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 3 p.m.
