Box Score Newport News, Va. - The Spartans jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the early going, but couldn't hold the lead as Tufts defeated Castleton 14-4 in the final game of the Spartans' road trip.
Castleton earned four runs on three hits, but committed four errors, allowing the Jumbos to score eight unearned runs. The loss drops the Spartans to 1-3 and bumps the Jumbos up to 2-0 on the year.
Tufts opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wade Hauser rocked an RBI triple, and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Max Freccia. Castleton responded with three runs in the top of the second. Tyler Lord roped a triple the scored Allen White and Matt McNamee, and was then driven in on a single by Mat Pause.
In the top of the third, the Spartans grabbed another run. Connor Hoagland began the inning with a walk and advanced to third before McNamee drove him in with a sacrifice fly to lead 4-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Jumbos busted the game open. Tufts scored seven runs on five hits, an error, and three hit batsmen to take the lead 9-4.
Castleton was rendered scoreless and limited to one hit by the Jumbos pitching staff for the rest of the game. The Jumbos added five more insurance runs down the stretch to bury the Spartans 14-4.
Freccia finished the game with four RBI, going 4-for-5 from the plate for the Jumbos. For the Spartans, Lord finished 1-for-3 with two driven in. Patrick Riley took the loss, surrendering three earned runs in four innings pitched.
Castleton will return to action on Mar. 23 when they travel to Sidell Stadium in Norton, Mass. to take on St. Joseph's (Maine) at 1 p.m.
