Castleton Falls to Tufts 13-4

Newport News, Va. - Castleton met Tufts in their second game of the day and third game of their Virginia trip, falling to the Jumbos 13-4 on Friday, Mar. 15 in Newport News.

The Spartans fell to 1-2 on the year, dropping their second game of their four game road trip. Ryan Zielinski went 2-for-5 and Matt McNamee knocked in two RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Jumbos piled on 13 runs on 10 hits.

In the top of the second, the Jumbos got on the board with an unearned run. After issuing a walk to James Howard, Derek Osborne was touched up for a double by Matt Luciani. With runners on second and third, Osborne balked to bring in the first run.

In the bottom of the third, the Spartans responded with two scores of their own. Cameron Curler earned a one-out walk, and Connor Hoagland reached on an error. Two batters later, McNamee stepped up and hit a two-run single that put the Spartans up 2-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Jumbos recaptured the lead in a big way. Tufts used two hit batsmen, three walks, and four hits brought in seven runs. Matt Ravey entered for the Spartans to finish the frame, retiring two of the three batters he faced to get Castleton out of the jam, but the squad trailed 8-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans cut the lead to four. Tyler Lord and Mat Pause reached on back-to-back walks, and Zielinski reached on an error. With the bases loaded, Curler and Hoagland each drove in a run on consecutive groundouts to make the score 8-4. 

Tufts responded immediately, with two runs in the top of the eighth, and added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to finish the game leading 13-4. Osborne took the loss for Castleton, surrendering eight earned runs in 4.1 innings, while Christian Sbily earned the win for the Jumbos, throwing five innings without surrendering a run.

Castleton and Tufts will meet again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. where the Spartans will look to avenge their loss.
