Box Score Hampton, Va. – Castleton earned its first win of the season on Friday afternoon, exploding for five runs in the fourth inning as the team finished with a 9-3 victory over Apprentice.
Junior Adam Greenlese was strong in earning the win on the mound. The southpaw scattered six hits over 7.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out two and walking a pair.
Offensively the Spartans scored nine runs on 12 hits and drew nine walks. Matt McNamee went 2-for-4 from the plate with a team-high four RBI. Connor Hoagland finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI while Dan Errico went 2-for-2 with three walks.
Neither team could get on the board through the first three innings, however, the visiting Spartans got on the board with five runs in the fourth. With Tyler Lord on second, Ryan Zielinski singled. The two then successfully pulled off the double steal for the 1-0 lead. Cameron Curler followed with a walk and Hoagland drove two both runners with a single through the ride side. He scored on a single by McNamee, and Errico eventually drove in McNamee for the 5-0 advantage.
Castleton added to its lead an inning later as Zielinski lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Lord. No one scored again until the seventh. With two outs and the bases load, McNamee tripled to left center, empting the bases and giving the Spartans a 9-0 lead.
Apprentice scored two in the bottom of the seventh to get within seven, 9-2. Cooper Long pitched the final two innings on relief and allowed just one run on three hits as Castleton finished with the 9-3 victory.
