Box Score South Burlington, Vt. - Josh Harris became Castleton's all-time points leader, notching his 44th career goal and 122nd career point, but it wasn't enough to stave off the Purple Knights, as the Spartans fell 5-4 in overtime.
Harris's goal came in the second period and gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead. His 44th goal of his career, combined with his 78 career assists, gave him 122 career points, putting him past Castleton's Brandon Heck on the all-time list.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 13-9-2 on the year, including an 8-8-1 record in the ECAC East. St Michael's improves to 8-15-0, 5-11-0 in the conference.
Castleton struck first, lighting the lamp just 11 seconds into the game. Defenseman Ryan Delorme ripped the puck into the net to start the game off the right way for the Spartans, giving them the early 1-0 lead. Kyle Richards and Kyle Pichler earned assists on the play. Three minutes later, with the Purple Knights on a power play, St. Michael's forward beat Kevin Lampron beat Erick Cinotti to tie the score 1-1 early in the first period.
At the 4:49 mark, Ryan Frost received a game misconduct penalty for hitting from behind, forcing the Spartans to kill off a ten-minute power play. Despite the constant offensive pressure, the Spartans were able to survive the disadvantage. After the first, the score remained tied 1-1.
In the second, both teams scored quickly. 59 seconds into the period, Josh Geary scored the Purple Knights' second goal of the game to give St. Michael's the lead. Castleton answered shortly after, scoring the tying goal just 22 seconds later. Tyler Gaudry notched the score with Justin Alonzo and Ryan Delorme getting assists on the play.
At the 6:51 mark of the second period, Harris made his mark in the Spartans record books. The senior forward scored the 44th goal of his career, notching his 122nd career point to pass Brandon Heck as the all-time leading scorer in Castleton history. The goal put the Spartans up 3-2 in the contest.
Castleton could not hold their lead, allowing two goals in the final minute of the second period. Josh Geary scored his second goal of the game with 57 seconds remaining in the frame and A.J. Pieprzak scored on a St. Michael's power play with three seconds to go, giving the Purple Knights a 4-3 advantage heading into the third period.
Late in the third period, Castleton drew even with a short-handed goal. Pichler received a pass from Ross Herzog and found some net behind St. Michael's goalie Eric McGuirk tying the game at 4-4 with 3:15 remaining in the game.
The rest of regulation played to a scoreless tie, taking the game into an extra period. Over the first four minutes, neither team could find the net, but with time winding down the Purple Knights were able to strike gold. Pieprzak notched his second goal of the game to give St. Michael's the 5-4 victory over the Spartans.
McGuirk finished the game with 32 saves and earned the win, while Cinotti turned away 30 attempts in the losing effort.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday in their final game of the regular season when they face off against Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
