Box Score Farmington, Maine – Fourth seed Castleton stayed close throughout but couldn't grab a lead in the second half as the defending champion Spartans fell 74-68 to second seed Husson in the North Atlantic Conference Championship on Saturday in Dearborn Gymnasium.
Castleton shot 51 percent from the floor but couldn't lock down a Husson team which made 52.9 percent of its shots, including an impressive 7-for-12 from downtown. The Spartans finish their season with a 16-12 record, the team's fourth straight season with a winning record. Husson improved to 20-8 with the victory and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Mark Comstock finished his illustrious Castleton career with 25 points, going 9-for-12 from the field, and added four rebounds and two assists. Comstock was named to the All-Tournament team after surpassing 20 points in each of the last three games. He finished his Spartan career with 1,642 points, good for fourth all-time in program history.
Logan White was the only other Castleton player in double figures, with 12 points. He was also named to the all-tournament team. Jeremy Odena scored nine points and had three rebounds off the bench.
The Spartans fell behind early but came back to draw even at 15 apiece with 12:49 left. However, a 7-0 run put Husson in front 22-15 less than two minutes later. Castleton kept it close, drawing even multiple times but the Spartans couldn't grab a lead and went into the half down 36-34.
In the second, Castleton pulled within one, 41-40 at the 16:14 mark. Unfortunately the team wouldn't get any closer. The Spartans never fell behind by more than ten, and White hit a triple with 2:32 left to cut the Husson lead to 71-66. Castleton made consecutive stops and had a pair of chances to make it a one possession game but couldn't covert. The Eagles then went 3-for-4 from the line in the final 23 seconds to clinch the win.
Notes: Comstock and White finished the season with 517 and 511 points respectively, the highest totals since Sean Manovill finished with 553 points during the 2003-04 season … White finished the season with a school-record 102 three-point field goals.
