Box Score Farmington, Maine – Castleton took down the top seed of the North Atlantic Conference tournament in convincing fashion, dismantling Me.-Farmington 70-46 on the Beavers' home court on Friday night.
The Spartans were extremely efficient on offense, shooting 28-for-46 (61%) from the floor. Mark Comstock led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 behind the arc. Logan White notched 12 points while Jeremy Odena chipped in with 10. Denny Wilhelm added eight points, grabbed five boards, and dished off four assists.
The Spartan defense held NAC Player of the Year Ben Johnson to just eight points. Nate Carson led the Beavers with 12 points, while Andrew Dickey netted nine.
The game began with each team trading baskets, with six lead changes in the first 5:39 of the contest. Yusuf Iman knocked down a long-range shot to tie the game at 12-12 with 13:16 to play in the first. The Spartans finished the half allowing only seven points over the final 13 minutes of the frame, finishing on a 25-7 run keyed by Comstock. The senior finished the half with 15 points as the Spartans went into halftime leading 37-19.
In the second half, Me.-Farmington came out of the locker room determined to strike a comeback. The Beavers began the half on an 8-0 run, cutting the Castleton lead to 10 with a Garrett Clemmer three-pointer with 17:02 remaining. The Spartans would not allow the Beavers to come any closer.
With 14:30 remaining, Dammy Mustapha found Comstock wide open under the basket off of a backdoor cut for a layup to put the Spartans up 43-31. Two possessions later, Comstock broke down his defender off the dribble, pulled up and drained a mid-range jumper to move the Spartan lead to 15.
With 12:33 left, the Beavers switched to a 2-3 zone to try and neutralize the Spartans' lethal scorers, but it made no difference. Jeremy Odena drilled two three-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the Spartan lead to 18 with 10:13 remaining. Castleton's Logan White provided the dagger when he drilled a deep three with 4:02 remaining to extend the Spartan lead to 23 points.
Castleton advances to the NAC championship game for the third time in four years, and will look to defend last year's title when they tip-off tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Me.-Farmington. The Spartans will play second seeded Husson, who beat Colby-Sawyer 80-70 on Friday night. Castleton split with the Eagles during the regular season, losing to them on the road and then beating them at home later in the season.
