Box Score Oswego, N.Y. - The Spartans fell to their first loss of the season to the hosting Lakers in the Oswego State Classic on Sunday afternoon. Castleton fell 3-2 in overtime to drop to 1-1 on the season.
Megan Hagg supplied the overtime dagger for Oswego St. who improved to 2-0 on the year. Brie Narodowy and Lisa Kilroy each scored for the Spartans and Jess Cameron finished with 47 saves on the day, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Lakers.
Kilroy opened the scoring in the first period, giving Castleton a 1-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period. The freshman received a pass from Nicoline Jensen and finished it off for her first career goal as a Spartan.
The advantage only held for 2:01 as the Lakers answered on a power play minutes later to tie the game. Olivia Boerson scored the tying tally to bring the score to 1-1 in the first period.
In the second, Oswego St. outshot the Spartans 17-6 and took the lead with a goal in the fourth minute of the period. Maddy Paul beat Cameron to put the Lakers up 2-1 in the second period.
Castleton dug in for the third period in an attempt to tie the game. Despite being outshot 14-6 in the frame, the Spartans found a way to tie the game with just over seven minutes left. Narodowy finished off a goal with assists from Samantha McNeil and Rachel Bombardier to tie the game at 2-2 with 7:46 remaining.
The Spartans fended off the Lakers down the stretch to force the extra period. In the overtime frame, Castleton killed off a penalty before surrendering the game-winning goal. Lizzy Marks won a faceoff in the Castleton zone directy to Hagg who slotted it past Cameron for the winner.
Castleton was 0-for-2 on the power play and killed off four out of five of penalties on the day. The Spartans were hard-pressed to generate an offensive attack and were outshot by the Lakers 50-21 on the day. Oswego St. goalie Bridget Smith finished the day with 19 saves for the win.
Castleton will return to action on Nov. 8 in their home opener when they take on University of New England.
