Box Score Rutland, Vt. - Freshman Lisa Kilroy netted a pair of goals and dished out a pair of assists while sophomore Samantha Pion ripped two scores to lead the Spartans to a 7-1 win over ECAC East rival St. Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
The Spartans tied their highest offensive output of the season with a seven-goal performance. They also notched their largest margin of victory so far this season with the six-goal victory. Paula Stephens made 13 saves in the win for Castleton while Abby Burke notched 29 saves for the Purple Knights.
Castleton struggled to find the net in the early going, scoring only two goals through the first two periods, despite outshooting the Purple Knights 23-10 over that span. Pion one goal in the first period, and grabbed her second in the second period. The defenseman's tallies both came off slap shots from the point that slipped past Burke.
The third period was when the Spartans geared up their game. The squad scored five goals in the final frame, the most in any one period this season. Rachel Bombardier netted her first goal of the year just 31 seconds into the third, redirecting a centering pass from Kimberly Gosselin into the net to put Castleton up 3-0.
Kilroy scored her first goal of the game 2:37 later on a string of quick passes. Anna Daniels carried the puck into the zone before dropping it off to Nicoline Jensen. Jensen ripped a pass towards the crease, where Kilroy was camped out. The freshman barely clipped the puck, sending it over Burke's shoulder and in. Daniels and Jensen each added goals to put Castleton up 6-0 with less than eight minutes to play.
St. Michael's notched their lone tally on a power play. Kayla Kee brought the puck into the zone, and cycled it behind the net. From there, she found Macey Thomas who dropped the puck to Olivia Collins at the point. Collins fired towards the net where several players screened the Castleton goaltender. The puck pinged off the right post and in, putting the Purple Knights on the board with 5:09 to play.
Kilroy added her second goal of the game late in the period for some insurance, with Emily Raber grabbing an assist on the play. The goal gave Kilroy her second goal and fourth point of the day, both career bests.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-4-0 on the season, with a 2-2-0 record within the ECAC East. Castleton will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 1 when they host Williams College in a non-conference tilt.
