Box Score Oswego, N.Y. – The Spartans won their second straight season opener as they shut out Cortland 1-0 in the first game of the Oswego St. Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Castleton had a dominating 44-21 advantage in shots as the team improved to 1-0 while the Red Dragons dropped to 0-1 on the year.
Junior Paula Stephens was strong in net once again, stopping all 21 shots she faced, including eight over the final 20 minutes of action. It marked her seventh career shutout, extending her own school record for career shutouts.
Following a scoreless opening period, Castleton got on the board early in the second. On the team's first power play of the period, Nicoline Jensen found Anna Daniels for a goal at 4:12.
Deanna Meunier took the loss for Cortland, despite stopping 43 of the 44 shots she faced.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow when they square off against tournament host Oswego St. at 3 pm.
