Box Score Plymouth, N.H. – The Castleton Spartans traveled to Plymouth to face the Panthers for the second time in ten days. Goals from Josh Harris and Eric Mack, and some stellar goalie play from Erick Cinotti lifted the squad to its third win in four games.
In the first period, the Panthers applied pressure to the Castleton defense, outshooting the Spartans 11-4 in the first frame. The squad was forced to kill off two penalties, and was able to do so due to Erick Cinotti's stellar play in goal. The junior made a sprawling kick save to keep out a breakaway attempt by Plymouth forward Kyle Greco to keep the score knotted late in the first.
In the second period, the Spartans came out firing on all cylinders. Just 39 seconds into the frame, the Castleton offensive pressure got to the Panthers. Dan Bell received a pass from Justin Alonzo and fired it from the left slot. The shot was saved, but the rebound scooted out to Josh Harris, who wristed the puck home past the Panthers' goaltender Jack Astedt. The goal was Harris' fifth of the season and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
At the 12:02 mark of the second period, Castleton struck again. The Spartans created a scrum in front of the net. Within the confusion, freshman Eric Mack was able to sweep the puck past the goalie and into the net. Mack's third score of the season increased the Spartan lead to 2-0.
In the final minute of the second frame, Plymouth found the net for the first time. Defenseman Zach Sarig ripped a shot from the left point that was saved by Spartans goalie Erick Cinotti. The rebound trickled in the crease and forward Mike Freitag pushed it over the goal line to put the Panthers on the board.
In the third period, the Spartans were able to fend off a Plymouth St. surge. Cinotti made 11 saves in the final frame to preserve the Spartans 2-1, and earn the victory. The junior made 25 saves on the day, helping the Spartans move to 9-5-2 on the year. The team will return to action January 18 when they host University of New England at Spartan Arena.
