Manchester, N.H. - Captain Brett Zeggil ripped a shot past the St. Anselm goaltender in the waning moments of the game to give the Spartans the lead with 16 seconds remaining and bury the Hawks 3-2 in a crucial conference clash.

With the victory, the team improves to 12-5-2, 7-4-1 in the ECAC East, and extends their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1). Zeggil's goal was his second in as many games, giving the captain four goals on the year.

In the first period, the Hawks struck gold, scoring at the 11:11 mark. Bryan Sullivan earned the poower play goal, converting on a pass from Johnny Daniels to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting the Hawks 10-6 in the first period, the Spartans found themselves trailing at the first intermission.

Just under seven minutes into the second, Ross Herzog evened the score at 1-1. The Castleton senior received a pass from defenseman Brian Greene and slipped it past the Hawks' goalie Robert Kang to even the score. Zeggil received an assist on the play.

Just 2:19 later, St. Anselm responded with a goal of their own. Liam McKillop earned the tally with assists going to John Ahern and Tim King. The Spartans pressured the Hawks continuously, outshooting them 13-4 in the second period, but Kang stood firm and allowed the Hawks to take their 2-1 lead into the locker room after the second frame.

In the third, the Spartans came out firing on all cylinders, and midway through the period their efforts finally paid off. Josh Harris netted his seventh goal in four games to draw the Spartans back to even. Dan Bell earned an assist on the play. With the clock winding down, the Spartans and Hawks were tied 2-2.

With time running out, and the game deadlocked, captain Brett Zeggil found himself with an opportunity to put the Spartans ahead. The senior found a way to slip the puck past St. Anselm's Kang to give Castleton a 3-2 lead with just 16 seconds remaining.

Zeggil's last-minute heroics proved to be the difference as the Spartans beat the Hawks, and earned sole posession of second place in the conference.

Castleton's Erick Cinotti made 16 saves to earn his 10th win of the season, while Kang turned away 32 of the Spartans' attempts in the loss. The squad will return to Spartan Arena next weekend to take on Babson Friday February 1 at 7 p.m.
