CASTINE, Maine – Castleton swept Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at Ritchie Field Saturday afternoon. The Spartans (9-13, 5-1 NAC) knocked off the Mariners (9-9, 2-4 NAC) 11-0 in five innings in the opener, and then posted a pair in the seventh to take the nightcap 5-3.

Tied 3-3 heading into the final inning, Caylee Fleury (Barre, Vt.) led off with a double into centerfield. Tori Fearon (Colchester, Conn.) attempted a sacrifice bunt that turned into the game's decisive play. Mariners' catcher, Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) pounced on the bunt. As she tried to get her throw inside of the runner, it sailed past the glove of her first baseman and into the corner in right. Both Fleury and Fearon ended up scoring on the play.

The error was the fourth of the nightcap and 12th of the day for Maine Maritime. Castleton took advantage of eight Maine Maritime errors in the opener, including three in the fifth inning when the Spartans gashed the Mariners for eight runs on eight hits and three errors to invoke the mercy rule.

All told, Castleton piled up 21 hits on the afternoon. Mercedes Maltbie (Warrensburg, N.Y.) and Shannon Jipner (Bristol, Vt.) each went 3-for-7 on the day. Maltbie had two doubles, scoring three runs and driving in a pair. Jipner recorded a double and drove in a run. Stephanie Sylvester (Swanton, Vt.) went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in.

Taylor Lively (Greenfield, Mass.) struck out five in the shutout opener to move to 5-8 on the season. Emily Sweeney (Weare, N.H.) fanned eight in the nightcap to improve to 4-5. She allowed three runs, two earned.

Maine Maritime's Erica Taylor (Mesquite, Texas) accounted for the two earned runs. She drilled a two-run blast over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3. It was Taylor's only hit on the day. Andi Flannery (E. Machias, Maine) went 4-for-7 on the afternoon.

Castleton returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference pair at Plymouth State. Maine Maritime will travel to Waterville on Tuesday to face Thomas in NAC play.
