NORTHFIELD, VT. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team defeated Norwich University, 11-7, on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

How it Happened:
Castleton started strong in the top of the first, as
Maddy Dudley worked a leadoff walk and
Samera Rideout was hit by a pitch to put two on.
Madison Gould delivered a double to right center to bring in the game's first run before
Alex Brouillette followed with a hard-hit single to score two more, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
Norwich responded in the bottom half, opening with a triple and scoring on a double to right center. A fielding error later in the inning allowed another run to come across, trimming the lead to 3-2 after one.
The Cadets took the lead in the second inning, stringing together multiple singles to load the bases. A hit to left field, combined with a throwing error, brought in two runs as Norwich moved ahead 4-3.
The Spartans answered with a breakout third inning, plating six runs to regain control. Brouillette and
Masson Billert each singled to put the Spartans on base.
Sami Horton drew a walk, and a series of wild pitches allowed Castleton to score the tying and go-ahead runs.
Jordan Hill added an RBI single, and Dudley paced the inning with a two-run double to right center as the Spartans built a 9-4 advantage. Norwich kept the pressure on in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of an error and several walks to plate three runs and cut the deficit to 9-7.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Castleton added insurance in the sixth.
Anna Winter reached on an error and
Carolyne Burlone followed with a single before Hill drove in a run on a groundout. Dudley added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 11-7. Castleton's defense held Norwich scoreless over the final frame to secure the victory.
Top Performers:
- Gould earned the win in relief, tossing four innings while allowing just three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
- Brouillette and Dudley each recorded three hits, with Dudley driving in three runs and Brouillette adding two RBIs.

Castleton will travel to Keene State on Saturday, April 4, for a conference double-header beginning at 12 p.m.
