Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton State College baseball team scored ten-straight runs midway through a non-conference match-up with Southern Vermont College to take a 13-3 win in seven innings at Spartan Field Tuesday afternoon.
With the game tied at 2-2 after three and a half innings, Castleton rattled off ten-straight runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach.
The Spartans took advantage of three walks in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) singled off the glove of a diving Max Ginter (Hamden, Conn.) in between third base and shortstop.
Castleton broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, sending nine men to the plate and chasing Southern Vermont starter Corey Briggs (Wood River, R.I.). Mat Pause (Wilder, Vt.) provided the big blow, a two-run triple to the gap in right-centerfield. Brandt and Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) also provided RBI-singles in the inning.
Three more runs in the sixth effectively put the game away on a two-run single from Adam Greenlese (Shokan, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Hoare (Duxbury, Vt.).
Five different pitchers combined to allow seven hits and three runs in the Spartan win. Dakota Aker (Schenectady, N.Y.) started and allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two. Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) picked up his first win in relief, tossing two innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Brandt remained hot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. He now has five hits in his last seven at bats with eight RBI. Pete Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Greenlese finished up with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. The Spartans took advantage of 12 Mountaineer walks and four hit-batsmen on the afternoon.
Pat Warrington (Folcroft, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Keith Diotte (Cambridge, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead Southern Vermont.
Briggs took the loss, going four-and-two-thirds innings, allowing nine earned on seven hits and seven walks with one strikeout.
Southern Vermont pushed across a run in the first taking advantage of early control issues Aker. The Mountaineers loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit on two walks and a hit-batsman. With two outs Diotte brought home the run with a swinging bunt single down the third baseline.
Castleton answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) RBI-single that scored Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.), who reached on a single to center. Zielinski later stole second and third and came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Spartans put the lead runner on in the third as Curler walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Zielinski followed with a walk and Curler took second on a passed ball, but wandered too far off of third base and got caught in a rundown. During the ensuing rundown Zielinski moved up to third and both runners were called out as they occupied third base at the same time, killing the rally.
The Mountaineers tied the game in the top of the fourth at 2-2, grabbing an unearned run on a run-scoring single to centerfield by Warrington. Dillon Desiderato (Burlington, Conn.) followed with a single to leftfield but Castleton leftfielder Adam Greenlese (Shokan, N.Y.) fired a strike to home to gun down Jarod Hayden (Esperance, N.Y.) trying to score from second.
Castleton will play six North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division games this weekend, beginning Thursday at New England College with a 2 pm doubleheader before returning home for a four-game set with U. Maine-Farmington on Friday and Saturday.
