Castleton Takes Care of Lyndon St.

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - Castleton earned an emphatic sweep of Lyndon St. on Tuesday afternoon, shutting down the Hornets 8-0 and then beating them 14-5 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division doubleheader.

In the opener, Adam Greenlese (Shokan, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game five-hitter to earn his third win of the season while Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 and Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) drove in three runs. Clifford added a three-run homer in the second game as the Spartans improved to 22-10 and 17-1 in the NEAC.
 
Castleton got on the board in the first as David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) tripled to lead off the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.).
 
Zak Mayo (Avon, Conn.) led off the fourth with a single back up the middle and promptly stole second. With one out Clifford smacked the first pitch he saw into the left-centerfield gap for an RBI-double to make it 2-0.
 
Zielinski doubled to lead off the fifth, moved to third on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center by Mayo.
 
The Spartans broke the game open with five insurance runs in the seventh as Brandt reached on an infield single stole second and came around to score on a two-base throwing error. Zielinski and Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) each singled to load the bases and Pete Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) walked to bring home the second run. After a strikeout, Clifford delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle and Mat Pause (Wilder, Vt.) followed with an RBI-single through the left side.

 

In the nightcap, the Spartans got on the Hornets early with a run in the first. They added a run in the second on an RBI single from senior DJ Deweiler (Starksboro, Vt.).

Lyndon got its first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second, as with runners on second and third, starter Grant Davis (Holliston, Mass.) threw a wild pitch, allowing the runner from third to score. Davis retired the next batter to end the threat.

In the third, Brandt and Curler led off with hits and Brandt came around to score on a single by Zielinski. Borowski followed with an RBI single to chase starter Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.). Mayo continued the onslaught with a 2-RBI double to the wall to make it 6-1. Clifford followed with a three-run shot over the right-field fence to make it an 8-run ball game. Castleton added three more runs in the frame for the 12-1 lead after three innings.

The Spartans added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but the Hornets came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a 14-5 ballgame.

Freshman Grant Davis (Holliston, Mass.) earned his first career victory, going five innings and allowing five runs on just three hits. Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) came on for the final two innings of relief to finish off Lyndon.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when then travel to Colby-Sawyer for the twinbill beginning at 2 p.m.
