HAMPTON, Va. - Castleton earned its first win of the year on Friday afternoon, scoring a season-high 11 runs and dispatching the Apprentice School 11-1 War Memorial Stadium.

The Spartans fell behind early, but got 11 unanswered runs over the final seven innings and senior Brandon Fay (So. Burlington, Vt.) was lights out on the mound as they improved to 1-6 on the season.

Fay scattered three hits over 7.0 innings and gave up just one run while striking out seven and walking a single player to earn the victory. Sophomore Adam Greenlese (Shokan, N.Y.) and junior Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to secure the win.

Three different players recorded at least three hits for Castleton, in Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.), Tyler Hoare (Duxbury, Vt.) and Matt McNamee (Pawling, N.Y.). All three added an RBI while Hoare and McNamee is crossed the plate twice. Freshman Jackson Howe (Tunbridge, Vt.) impressed as well, going 2-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBI.

After giving a run in the second inning, Castleton countered in the top of the third as David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) singled home Howe to knot the score 1-1 after three innings.

One innings later, the Spartans added three more runs, all with two outs, to grab a 4-1 advantage. Hoare doubled home Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) for the first run and McNamee followed with a double of his own to plate Hoare. A single by Howe drove in McNamee for the final run of the frame.

Castleton added three more runs in the sixth when each of the first three batters singles to load the bases for Howe. The freshman got the RBI walk and Hoare scored from third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.) earned the final RBI of the inning with a single to give the Spartans a 7-1 lead.

Four more runs in the eighth put the game out of reach and Schoeneberger struck out two and allowed just one hit in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Spartans return to the diamond for a doubleheader against Coast Guard on Sunday beginning at noon.
