RUTLAND, Vt. - Junior Hannah Martini (Fayston, Vt.) scored 5:46 into overtime to propel the fifth-seeded Spartans to the 3-2 upset victory over No. 4 seed Salve Regina on Saturday evening in the ECAC East quarterfinals.
Freshman Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) was huge in net once again, turning away 38 shots as Castleton was outshot 40-18 but still managed to earn the program's first-ever trip to the ECAC East semifinals. The Spartans also improve to a program-best 10-13-2 with the victory while Salve Regina concludes its season with a 11-10-5 mark.
The Seahawks got on the board first, scoring 10:22 into the first period and taking that 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Castleton came out strong out of the break and it paid off as freshman Molly Howard (Shelburne, Vt.) lit the lamp 5:20 into the second. Hulbert scored off assists from senior Meagan Hulbert (Barre, Vt.) and junior Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.).
Two minutes and five seconds into the third period, Hulbert gave the Spartans their first lead of the game. The forward deposited her fifth goal of the season with help from Werger and junior Eileen Coyne (Attleboro, Mass.) to make ti 2-1.
Salve Regina responded at the 12:23 mark to tie the score 2-2, but neither team was able to score again in regulation.
In the extra period, Martini found the back of the net at the 5:46 mark off assists from Katilin Hayes (Burlington, Vt.) and BriAnna Naradowy (North Smithfield, R.I.) to lift the Spartans to the overtime victory.
Castleton returns to the ice on Saturday when they have to take on defending national champion Norwich at 3 p.m. in the ECAC East semifinals.
