Box Score South Burlington, Vt. – The Castleton Women's Hockey team skated its way to a 5-0 shutout of ECAC East opponent St. Michael's College on Saturday afternoon.
The squad was led by freshman netminder Brittany Brayman (Hartford, N.Y.) who made 30 saves for the Spartans in her first career start and earned her first win of the season. Ten different players recorded a point in the contest, including three assists from Eileen Coyne (No. Attleboro, Mass.).
Castleton was stumped offensively in the first period by the Purple Knights' goaltender Erin Stevens. The Spartans outshot St. Michael's 19-4 in the first period, but couldn't find the net and entered the first intermission in a 0-0 deadlock.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to get on the board in the second period. Only 2:49 into the period, Brianna Narodowy (N. Smithfield, R.I.) cashed in on a pass from Coyne to give Castleton the lead. Allie Howard (Brandon, Man.) followed suit minutes later, scoring off of a Coyne assist to increase the Spartans lead to 2-0.
Under a minute into the third period, Castleton struck again. This time it was freshman Anna Daniels (Falun, Sweden) who scored on the Spartans' power play. Senior Hanna Martini (Fayston, Vt.) increased the Castleton lead just 37 seconds later, slipping a pass from Samantha Pion (Easthampton, Mass.) into the back of the net, making the score 4-0. Daniels would cap the Spartans afternoon with her second score of the game in the waning minutes of the third, as the team finished the game winning 5-0.
The Spartans improves their overall record to 3-1 and their ECAC East record evens at 1-1. Castleton will return to the ice on Friday, November 16 at 7 pm against conference opponent Plymouth State at Spartan Arena.
