Box Score Boston, Mass. – Castleton gave up a pair of goals in the third period, but still managed to earn the victory on Friday night as Kyle Pichler's goal in overtime lifted the Spartans to a 5-4 win over UMass-Boston.
Pichler found the back of the net through traffic at the 3:16 mark of the overtime session off assists from Kyle Richards and Josh Harris to secure the victory. With the win Castleton improves to 2-2-1 on the season.
Harris concluded the evening with four assists, giving him 102 points for his career. He is just the third Spartan hockey player with 100 career points and joining Stuart Stefan and Brandon Heck.
Castleton finished 31-28 shot advantage in the contest and connected on one of its three power-play opportunities while UMass-Boston was 1-for-1 with the man advantage.
The Beacons opened up the scoring at the 11:51 mark of the first period as Rob Florentino scored off a pass from Mike DeGrazia. The Spartans couldn't net a goal in the period and Mass-Boston owned an 11-7 shot advantage.
Dan Bell tied the game up at 1-1 just 12 seconds into the second period. Nick Lazorko took the faceoff and passed the puck to Ryan Frost and he found Bell, who deposited his first goal of the season.
Sophomore Kevin Van Dyk gave Castleton a 2-1 lead at the 2:45 mark, as Harris won the faceoff back to the defenseman and he ripped the shot past Zach Andrews. Just over two minutes later freshman Tyler Swarter earned his first collegiate goal off assists from Harris and Pichler to push the Spartan advantage to 3-1.
Castleton took advantage of its second penalty of the game as Gabriel Gromp scored right in front of the net to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead at the 9:49 mark. Harris earned the assist on the play.
The Beacons added a goal at 12:36 by Jeremy Finger, but finished the second period in a 4-2 deficit.
In the third UMass-Boston added a pair of late goals to tie the game 4-4. Frankie DeAugustine and Kit Sitterley skated the length of the ice with Harvey and Harvey found the back of the net at the 4:54 mark. Less than 90 seconds later, DeGrazia tied the score at four when he buried a shot at 6:19 of the third period. Florentino and Richter both picked up assists on the play.
Eric Cinotti earned the win in his first appearance in net of the season. The junior stopped 24 shots while Andrews finished with 26 saves between the pipes.
Castleton returns to action on Saturday when the team faces Babson at 4 pm.
