Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Plattsburgh women's soccer team scored 1:29 into overtime on Thursday night to propel the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over Castleton at Spartan Stadium.

Sophomore Lauren Gonyea found the ball on her foot in front of the net surrounded a group of players and put it into the back of the net to clinch the win for Plattsburgh. The loss snapped the Spartans three-game win streak to open the season.

The game started slowly, however in the 23rd minute Plattsburgh's Leigh Metcalf (Baxter, Ont.) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Lindsey Keyser (Keeseville, N.Y.) lofted a cross from the right side of the field and found Metcalf inside the box where she knocked home her first goal of the season.

Castleton responded at the 25:16 mark as senior Maria Arnot (Milford, N.Y.) headed the ball in off a corner from senior Courtney Chadburn (No. Clarendon, Vt.).

Five minutes later Chadburn nearly connected on another corner. Instead, the ball was kicked outside the 18 where junior Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) collected it and fired a shot past goalie Danielle Schmitt (Washingtonville, N.Y.).

The Cardinals came back to tie it before the half, as Keyser scored off a Metcalf corner at the 32:48 mark.

In the second half, neither team could get a goal as Schmitt made one save while Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) made six for the Spartans. The best chance for either team came with just over two minutes remaining. Plattsburgh's Renee Egan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) got the ball at the six and tried to get a shot off but Davis made an excellent challenge, diving at her feet to make the stop and end the threat.

In the overtime, Plattsburgh got one shot and it was all they need to clinch the win. The Cardinals improve to 2-0-1 with the win while Castleton falls to 3-1 on the season.

Davis finished with nine saves in goal for the Spartans while Schmitt saved three shots.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to play Plymouth St. at 1 p.m.
