BRISTOL, R.I. - The Spartans went to overtime for the second time in as many games, but were unable to come up with a victory, as a goal by Rhode Island College in the 98th minute sent Castleton to a 2-1 defeat at Bayside Field on Sunday in the Seventh Annual Turfer Athletic Classic.

In the first half Castleton got behind early following a goal by Donald Dane (Derry, N.H.) just 17:58 into the contest. Young scored off a deflection inside the box and Rhode Island maintained its 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half while out-shooting the Spartans 10-7.

Castleton came out stronger in the second half and finally broke through in the 83rd minute. The Spartans fired a shot on net that was blocked inside box, however, it was ruled a hand ball and the team was awarded a penalty shot. Freshman Dameon Young (Fairfax, Vt.) converted the penalty kick at the 82:58 mark, tying the game, 1-1.

Both teams managed one more shot before heading to an extra period. In the first overtime it was the Anchormen who got the golden goal, as Dane scored his second goal of the game, this one on a one-time from Peter Amoriggi (Smithfield, R.I.).

Rhode Island's Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made four saves in net while sophomore Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) had eight stops between the pipes.

The Spartans also had two players named to the Turfer Classic All-Tournament on Sunday, in senior defender Nick Johnas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.).

The loss drops Castleton to 0-1-1 on the season. The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, for their home opener against Southern Vt.
