BANGOR, Maine – The Husson Eagles earned its first North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) East sweep with 9-0 and 11-10 victories over Castleton on Tuesday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
Husson's Ryan Arsenault (Portland, Maine) threw a two-hit shutout gem to lead the Eagles past the Spartans in game one while Kyle Vanidestine's (Bangor, Maine) grand slam homerun lifted Husson over Castleton in the nightcap.
The Eagles improve to 13-8 overall and 2-0 in the NEAC East. The Spartans fall to 3-13 (0-2 NEAC East).
The Eagles reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after Jake Arthers (Belfast, Maine) tripled and Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine) singled to left, plating Arthers. Vanidestine took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to drive in Smith.
Husson tacked on five additional runs in the bottom of the third inning beginning when Smith scored following a wild pitch. Cody McInnis (Bangor, Maine) doubled, driving in two runs and the Eagles collected two additional unearned runs to round out the inning.
Tom Crews (Bangor, Maine) upped the tally to 8-0 when he scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly by Ethan Guerette (Sabattus, Maine) plated Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, R.I.).
Castleton's only hits of the game came in the second inning off a Zak Mayo (Avon, Conn.) single to third and a fourth inning line drive to right field by Matt Eisenhuth (So. Newfane, Vt.).
In seven innings of work, Arsenault struck out seven while allowing just two hits and one walk. Castleton's Brandon Fay (So. Burlington, Vt.) shouldered the loss, throwing two innings while allowing seven runs.
In game two, Vanidestine powered the Eagles to an 11-10 victory with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the sweep.
The Eagles reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the first off a RBI triple by Smith who would score on a balk. Castleton answered in the top of the second inning with a five-run effort that began with a RBI double down the left field line. Jack Lancelin (Chatham, N.Y.) singled plating Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) and Mayo. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) pushed Lancelin across the plate.
Husson responded with a four-run third inning that included two unearned runs and a RBI single for McInnis. The third inning ended with a 6-5 Husson lead.
The Spartans reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Peter Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) grounded out to second base, plating Aaron Zrenda (East Lyme, Conn.). Zielinski opened the inning with a home run. The Eagles tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 7-7.
Castleton seized momentum in the top of the sixth with a two-run ground rule double by Eisenhuth. Zrenda scored on a passed ball to give the Spartans a 10-7 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Vanidestine crushed a grand slam home run to left-center, giving the Eagles an 11-10 lead and all they would need to earn the win.
Husson's Dan Beatham (Dexter, Maine) was credited with the win for his two innings of work, featuring three strikeouts and two runs allowed. Dakota Aker (Scotia, N.Y.) received the loss for six innings of work that allowed 11 runs, 8 hits, and 5 strikeouts.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow against Husson University with game one of the doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
