RYE, N.Y. – Senior forward Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ont.) notched a hat trick and assisted on another score to lead Manhattanville over Castleton, 8-1, in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Division III Women's East Tournament on Saturday night at Playland Ice Casino.
The Valiants improve to 17-7-2 overall on the season and advance to the semifinal round against no. 5 seeded UMass-Boston on Saturday, March 5 at 12:00 or 3:00 pm. The Spartans' season closes at 5-19-2.
Manhattanville scored three times in the opening period to claim a comfortable lead and never looked back.
Haleigh Hutchinson (Southgate, Mich.) opened up the scoring at 11:56 of the period tallying her 13th goal of the season on feeds from teammates Charlotte Hotaling (Southfield, Mich.) and Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgfield, Conn.) for a 1-0 lead.
Nonis followed with two of her three goals on the night striking first at 13:14 and again at 15:55 for her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Sophomore forward Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ont.) assisted on both markers.
In the second, Hutchinson and Nonis each found the back of the net again with Hutchinson burying her 14th of the season past Castleton senior goaltender Amanda Hoy (Brockport, N.Y.) only one minute and 32 seconds into the period. Nonis followed at 7:49 on the power play to complete her hat trick.
Ella Hubley (Santa Monica, Calif.) added sixth goal of the season at 10:59 while Kehoe got in on the scoring at 15:18 of the period on assists from Nonis and Jess Scioli (No. Reading, Mass.).
After Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Que.) made it 8-0 at 10:16 of the third period, senior forward Laura Szwed (White Lake, Mich.) potted her team-leading 10th goal of the season on feeds from Kaitlin Hayes (Burlington, Vt.) and Christine Newton (Ogden, Utah) at 13:17.
Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Que.) made 12 saves in net to improve to 10-5-2 overall on the season. Hoy turned away 44 shots on the night in the loss.
