11/4/2011 12:00:00 AM

RUTLAND, Vt. - Junior Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) was outstanding in net but the Spartans couldn't fully contain the potent Cadet offense as they fell 4-0 to Norwich on Friday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

Dembowski stopped at least 15 shots in each period, finishing the contest with an astounding 49 saves between the pipes. Castleton, meanwhile, peppered Norwich sophomore goaltender Joanie Plamondon (Pont-Rouge, Que.) with six shots.

The Cadets struck just 8:46 into contest, as Sarianne Lynn (Wethersfield, Conn.) fed freshman Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) for the score in front of the net. Norwich added to their lead 2:29 later as Melissa Rundlett (Saco, Maine) found the back of the net on the rebound of a shot by sophomore Kayla Lascelle (Cornwall, Ont.).

The Spartans nearly cut the lead in half 14:10 into the period as a shot by Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.) hit the inside of the left post and slid across the crease before a Cadet defender knocked it out of harms way.

In the second period Norwich struck twice. Freshman Tyne Gove (Berwick, Ont.) scored the first goal 9:15 into the period with assists from Jillayne DeBus (Howell, Mich.) and Anderson. At the 12:55 mark of the period it was Renee Lortie (Cornwall, Ont.) recording her first goal of the game off nice passing by Brittany Sharman (Ayer's Cliff, Que.) and Lynn.

Dembowski and the Spartan defense held strong over the final 20 minutes, shutting down the Norwich offense.

The Cadets improve to 2-1 on the season with the victory while Castleton falls to 0-3 on the season. The Spartans look for their first win of the season on Saturday when they host St. Michael's at 7 p.m.
