CORTLAND, N.Y. - Six different players scored a goal as the Cortland women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton St., 6-3, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 with the win. The Spartans dropped to 0-2.
Junior Brianna Rossi (Stormville/Brewster Bulldogs) led the Cortland offense with a goal and three assists. Two Red Dragon players netted their first career goals. Freshman Chelsie Hausberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) had a goal and two assists and freshman Kaitlin Friel (Oswego/Oswego H.S.) contributed a goal and an assist.
Seniors Jen Whalen (Langhorne, PA/Neumann) and Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) and junior Kellie Micillo (Sayville/Suffolk PAL) also scored goals for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Gina Tomei (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) and freshman Abbie Adams (Potsdam/Cornwall Typhoons) picked up assists. Senior goalie Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.) registered 30 saves.
Junior Danielle Roberts (St. Albans, VT/SUNY Plattsburgh) scored twice for the Spartans, and junior Hanna Martini (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) netted a goal. Junior Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, BC/Warner Hockey School) recorded two assists and three other players each had one assist. Junior goalie Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, MD/New Jersey Rockets) made 23 saves.
Cortland took a 2-1 lead after the first period as Friel and Whelan sandwiched goals around Roberts' power-play score. Friel scored on a one timer at the left post at three minutes, 56 seconds. Roberts tied the game at 7:31 with a wrist shot from the left point through traffic. Whelan netted her goal at 18:40 on a wrist shot from the right point.
The Spartans tied the game at 2-2 when Roberts again scored on the power play, knocking a loose puck past Double in front at 11:26 of the second period. Micillo put the Red Dragons ahead to stay with a deflection in front on the power play at 15:19 of the second. Rossi, after earning an assist on Cortland's first three goals, then made it a 4-2 game at the 17:21 mark, knocking in a loose puck in front.
Martini pulled Castleton St. to within 4-3 at 6:17 of the third period on a wrist shot that found the upper right corner, but the Red Dragons answered on Hausberger's deflection in front just 11 seconds later. Giamo finished the scoring with an unassisted goal that deflected in off a Spartan player at 9:55.
