At 3:10 of the first period on the power play, senior forward Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass.) put Saint Michael's ahead, 1-0, redirecting a puck into the back of the net that was centered from the right corner boards on a feed from teammate Michele Doherty (Chelmsford, Mass.) past Spartans' goaltender Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) for her second goal of the season.
Nelligan gave the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead at 9:28 of the first with a wrist shot sniped through Dembowski's five-hole. McDonald assisted on the score as she won the faceoff in Castleton's defensive zone and slipped the puck to a wide open Nelligan in the slot.
