Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. - Junior Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt.) scored four minutes into the game to lift Castleton to a 2-0 win over Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans are now 2-1, while the Chargers dip to 1-3-1.
Chadburn, who scored her first goal of the season, gave the away team an early lead after dribbling through a couple of Colby-Sawyer defenders. Once she had made space, Chadburn fired a high shot towards the goal that went over the keepers head and into the net.
Castleton held possession for much of the first half and had it pay off in the 26th minute. Junior Maria Arnot (Milford, N.Y.) seemed to be pinned in the right corner by the Colby-Sawyer defense, but was able to get a good foot on the ball sending it towards the front of the net. Waiting for the cross was junior teammate Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, Conn.). Cooke settled the ball and ripped a shot right at Colby-Sawyer keeper Liz Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.). The goalie got a piece of the ball, but could not control the rocketed shot and it deflected into the net. The tally was Cooke's second of the season and gave the Spartans a 2-0 edge.
Colby-Sawyer showed more urgency in the second frame on the offensive end and had a couple of good chances. However, sophomore Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) made five saves in preserving Castleton's first shutout of the season.
Junior Allie Piper (Barre, Vt.), who played the final 12 minutes of the first half and all of the second, made a pair of saves for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer hits the road for the first of three-straight away contests beginning on Saturday at Anna Maria. Castleton hosts Mass. College of Liberal Arts next Wednesday.
