Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt.) and Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, Conn.) each had two goals and one assist to lead Castleton State College to a 4-1 win over Norwich University Tuesday evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Howard Field.

Chadburn gave Castleton (4-2) a 1-0 advantage early in the 13th minute of play, scoring her second goal of the season off a rebound. Cooke eluded a defender and struck a shot to the far-side post that went past the dive of Cadet goalie Alecia Wright (Piffard, N.Y.). The shot caught just enough of the post to remain in play however, and Chadburn tapped it into the open net. Just 22 seconds later Nora Osinski (Orange, Conn.) tied the game converting a Brittany Casey (Pointe-Claire, Que.) assist.

From then on, it was all Chadburn, Cooke and the Spartan defense. Cooke scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 24th minute, sending a rocket past the diving Wright. Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) sent a through-pass to Cooke who unleashed her shot at the left post. Wright dove and got a hand on it, but it still found the back of the net.

Cooke potted her sixth goal of the season off a Chadburn helper in the 58th minute, and Chadburn put the game on ice in the 75th minute with an assist coming from Megan Blongy (Rutland, Vt.).

Castleton's defense, buoyed by the solid play of keeper Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) and marking back Carole Frey (Waterbury Center, Vt.) held strong throughout the match. Norwich's lone goal was the product of a miscommunication in the defensive backfield, one of the rare mistakes made by Davis (five saves) and her defensive mates.

Wright finished with six saves for the 3-2 Cadets.

Castleton will open its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) schedule this weekend with home contests scheduled for Saturday and Sunday versus Thomas and Maine-Farmington respectively.
