PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.– Lauren Gonyea's (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) first goal of the season in the 42nd minute of the first half proved to be the game-winner as Plattsburgh St. defeated Castleton, 2-1, in its home opener on Saturday night in non-conference action.

The Cardinals improve to 5-1 overall on the season. The Spartans fall to 3-2.

Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, Conn.) gave Castleton an early 1-0 lead in first half at the 30:32 mark with her team-leading fourth goal of the season beating on Plattsburgh St. goaltender Alina Greiser (Florida, N.Y.) off of a beautiful feed from Meryssa Wacholder (East Greenbush, N.Y.).

The Spartans advantage was short-lived as Kayla Rabideau (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) found the equalizer for the Cardinals just six minutes and 17 seconds later off of a corner kick from Akino Funayama (Hokkaido, Japan).

Gonyea put Plattsburgh St. ahead for good at 42:03 of the first half knocking home her first tally of the season setup by teammates Olivia Hopeck (Mechanicville, N.Y.) and Emily Riley (Massena, N.Y.).

Castleton State goalkeeper Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) made 11 saves for the Spartans while Greiser notched two saves.

Plattsburgh St. held the advantage in shots, 27-6 and won the corners match-up 9-1.
