CASTLETON, Vt. - Megan Blongy (Rutland, Vt.) netted the game-winner in the 85th minute of play as Castleton State College defeated the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) 3-2 in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Blongy netted her third goal of the season off a Kelly Gerken (Scottsville, N.Y.) assist, striking a rocket just inside the nearside post. Castleton forwards Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt.) and Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, Conn.) drew a pair of defenders to the center of the field and Gerken deftly played the ball wide to Blongy who struck from 18 yards out.

Blongy seemingly had scored the game-winner  in the 81st minute, but her goal was waved off as the sophomore was whistled for offsides.

MCLA (1-2-1) senior Jessica Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) broke a scoreless tie six minutes into the contest, slipping it past Castleton goalie Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.). Samantha Miller (Reading, Mass.) sent a lofted pass from the defensive third, and Tietgens outran the Spartan defense, sending a shot off Davis' hands and into the net.

Castleton (3-1) found the equalizer in the 21st minute as Chadburn hooked up with Cooke. Chadburn corralled a through pass from the midfield, beat a defender a dropped back to Cooke who beat keeper Kate Tspatsaris (Peabody, Mass.). The Spartans made it 2-1 just two minutes later on Brynn Campbell's (North Clarendon, Vt.) first goal of the season. Campbell intercepted a Traiblazer clear attempt, and unleashed a bending shot from 25 yards out that fell just inside the far post.

The Spartans had a pair of excellent chances to push an insurance marker through, but Shannon Maloney (Cheshire, Mass.) came up huge on the defensive end both times. In the 48th minute of play Cooke and Chadburn worked a give-and-go setting up Chadburn for a one-on-one opportunity, but Maloney tracked the two-time conference player of the year down and cleared the ball away. In the 71st minute Maloney once again foiled a Chadburn chance, pouncing on a through ball from Blongy and turning it up field.

Tietgens made it 2-2 in the 73rd minute, converting with her left foot just under the crossbar. Danielle Parenteau (Southampton, Mass.) played a centering pass to Tietgens who settled and struck the shot towards the far post.

Tsapatsaris stopped five shots in the contest, while Davis turned away six for the Spartans.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday when the Spartans travel to Plattsburgh State for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. MCLA will opens its MASCAC schedule Saturday when the Trailblazers play host to Worcester State at 1:00 p.m.
