Castleton rolls to win over Green Mountain

Castleton, VT - The Castleton State College men's basketball team shot better than fifty-percent from the field, knocked in 7-of-12 from three-point distance, en route to a 72-62 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over Green Mountain College Tuesday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Jared Paul (Tampa, FL) led the Spartans with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT) added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Mike Knight (Spring Valley, NY) added a double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin Eisenberg (Mooultonborough, NH) and Malcolm Still, Jr. (Lawnside, NJ) chipped in nine and eight respectively off the Spartan bench.

Rui Carmo (Cape Coral, FL) scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and hauled in 13 rebounds to pace Green Mountain offense. Trent Morgan (Streetsboro, OH) added 16 points and six steals for the 6-13, 3-7 Eagles.

The Spartans canned 5-of-7 attempts from beyond the three-point stripe during the opening half to take a 37-30 lead into halftime. Castleton stretched its lead to 12 (33-21) midway through the period thanks to three-straight three-pointers from Eisenberg. The Eagles closed the half on a 9-4 run, capped by a Chris Gaskin (Atlanta, GA) three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining.

Castleton used a 16-7 run midway through the second half to open up a 68-46 lead with 4:15 remaining in the contest, before settling in for the 10-point win. The Spartans finished the game 30-for-59 (50.8%) from the field, including a scorching 16-for-26 (61.5%) during the second half.

Castleton improves to 14-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play. It is the quickest Castleton has gotten to 14 wins since the 1997-98 season when the Spartans finished 19-8 and won the Mayflower Conference, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament.

Both teams return to action this weekend, hosting a pair of games versus Thomas and Maine-Farmington. The Spartans will play host to Thomas Friday evening, while the Eagles host Maine-Farmington, both games are slated to tip-off at 8:00 p.m.

Friday's game at Castleton will be part of the NCAA "Take a Kid to the Game" a one-of-a-kind initiative that will be promoted at more than 700 men's and women's basketball games across the country.
