MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) provided a pair of assists and Lindsey Gullett (Wawaneesa, Man.) potted the game winner in the second period as Castleton State College opened its season with a 2-1 win at Saint Anselm in ECAC Men's East action Friday evening.
The win in both teams' season opener was the first in Castleton's seven-year history over Saint Anselm.
It wasn't until late in the first period that Stuart Stefan (Delhi, Ont.) opened the scoring for Castleton. Stefan scored with 3:48 remaining in the period. Stefan converted his first of the season on the power play, scoring on Schoeneberger's first assist of the game.
Five minutes into the second period, Gullett scored what proved to be the game-winner for Castleton, giving them a 2-0 lead, again off a Schoeneberger helper. Castleton's special teams proved to be a key part of the second period as the Spartans were able to kill off three penalties in the period to maintain the 2-0 margin.
Saint Anselm scored their lone goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) scored in front of the net on passes from Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) and Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.). The goal was King's first of the season, and the first for the Hawks, who fall to 0-1 overall, and 0-1 in the ECAC East with the loss. The Spartans improve to 1-0 overall.
