Castleton opens New Year with win

Castleton, VT - Castleton placed five players in double-figures en route to a 72-68 win over visiting Skidmore in men's basketball action Sunday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium. With the win Castleton improves to 5-4 overall, while Skidmore falls to 7-2.

Derick Faragon (Schenectady, NY) scored a game-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting as Castleton came from behind to pick up the first win of 2010. The Thoroughbreds shot 51.6% from the field in the fist half to race out to the lead, including an 8-for-18 performance from beyond the three-point arch. Trailing 39-28 with 3:35 remaining in the first half, the Spartans closed out the opening stanza on a 12-4 run to keep the game within reach. The run continued into the second half, as the Spartans tallied the first six points to grab a 46-43 lead on a Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT) three-pointer.

Castleton trailed just once more, 50-49 with 14:34 remaining in the contest, before a Faragon three-pointer gave the Spartans the lead for good with 13:20 left.

Sakhile Sithole (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) led the Thoroughbreds with 13 points off the bench, while Jon Douglas (Shutesbury, MA) added 12. Skidmore cooled considerably in the second half, shooting 2-for-16 from beyond the arch and 27.6% from the field.

Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT) followed Faragon in the scoring column with 14 points, while Mike Knight (Spring Valley, NY) added 13 and Hughes chipped in 11.

The Spartans will take to the road Tuesday evening for a non-conference tip-off at Framingham State scheduled for 7:00 pm.
