Box Score Poultney, VT - Sophomore forward Derick Faragon (Schenectady, NY) poured in 19 points to lead the Castleton State College men's basketball team over Green Mountain College, 61-52, on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at The Eagle Dome.
Castleton improves to 10-6 overall (4-1 NAC). The Eagles fall to 4-10 and 1-4 in NAC play.
Faragon went 8-of-17 from the field, brought down five rebounds and dished out three assists to pace the Spartans. Mike Knight (Spring Valley, NY) cashed in 13 points (5-of-10 shooting) and grabbed nine boards while freshman swingman Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT) added to the offense with 11 points in the win.
Senior forward Rui Carmo (Fort Meyers, FL) notched a double-double with 24 points and 17 boards. Carmo led all scorers with a 10-of-14 night from the field including a 4-of-11 performance from the line.
A close contest throughout the majority of the first half, Castleton broke away with under seven minutes left to play with a 12-2 run with Knight scoring six points during that span.
Knight canned a layup through traffic at 6:27 on a nice feed by teammate Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, VT). Knight followed with two fouls shots at 5:55 pushing the lead to 24-17. At 1:42, Faragon found an open Knight under the bucket to extend the Spartans' lead to 30-19.
Eddie Asiedou (Bronx, NY) closed out the first with a three to cut into Castleton's lead at halftime, 33-22.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 14-point lead in the second half as Faragon nailed a jumper at 14:01 to make it 45-31.
The Eagles long range shooting got hot late in the half as Trent Morgan (Streetsboro, OH) cut the deficit to single digits at 4:16 with a 3-ball making it 57-49. After a free throw by Faragon at 3:04 to push the gap back to nine points, Asieduo nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing putting Green Mountain down by six, 58-52.
Comstock went 1-of-2 from the line at the 2:16 mark and Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT) put the game on ice for Castleton at 1:30 driving past a defender for a wide-open layup.
The Spartans return to action on January 29, on the road, against Maine-Farmington at 5:30 p.m. Green Mountain travels to Thomas on January 29 with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
