Castine, ME-The Castleton State College softball team swept Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader, winning the first game 10-9 in eight innings and the second 18-3.
Game One: With the game tied 5-5 heading into the top of the seventh Castleton scored three runs and appeared to take control. Maine Maritime answered with three of its own to send the game into extra innings where Castleton outlasted the host Mariners 10-9.
Laura Rogers, Allison Lamay and Hilary Bemis each had two hits, including a double to lead the Spartan offense. Rogers drove in two and scored a pair of runs.
Starting pitcher, Angie Carpenter also helped her cause at the plate with a single, two RBI and one run scored. Freshman Cassandra Koehne also had two hits to go along with one RBI and one run scored.
Tosha Whittemore pitched the eighth inning, allowing one unearned run to get the win.
Game Two: Castleton unleashed a 15-hit attack, and scored 11 runs in the seventh inning to blow a 7-3 game wide open late. Rogers once again led the offense with three doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Carpenter collected a career-high four hits and scored three runs while driving in one. Koehne went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in the win.
Rogers also started and went the distance, earning the win. The senior pitchers scattered four hits while striking out four in the complete game victory. The Spartans improve to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win.
Castleton will take on Husson College on Sunday afternoon in a NAC doubleheader.
