Castleton sweeps Elms College in NAC doubleheader

Chicopee, MA-Castleton second baseman, Brad Polcare went 6-for-9 with four RBI and five runs scored to lead Castleton State College to a doubleheader sweep of Elms College in NAC baseball action. The Spartans took game one 12-3 and finished off the night cap 9-6.

Game One: Polcare led the offense, going 4-for-5 with three singles and a triple, three runs and three RBI in game one. With the game tied at 1-1, Castleton exploded for eight runs in the second inning, keyed by a two-run double by Dan Conley. The Spartans collected seven hits in the inning, with Conley and Kevin McPeek smacking doubles, and Anthony DiPietrantonio hitting a one-out triple.

Castleton's Ken Cook went the distance to earn the win, allowing three earned on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking four. Over his last our starts Cook is 4-0 with four complete games, two shut-outs and a 1.29 ERA. Cook has struck out 26 while walking just nine over the span, and has allowed 19 hits.

Senior, Chris Ragis was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Conley finished with two hits and three RBI. Lauck Blake also drove in a pair of runs and scored two more on two hits.

Game Two: Rob Turner pitched six innings, allowing one earned on four hits and three walks while striking out nine to lead the Spartans to the win in the night cap. Much like Cook, Turner appears to be peaking at the right time. The righthander is 3-0 over his last four starts with a 1.38 ERA in 26 innings, while striking out 21, walking six and allowing 19 hits.

Ragis collected three hits including a double and drove in two runs to lead the Spartan offense. Conley had a pair of doubles, while Polcare collected two more hits and score a pair of runs while driving in one.

Polcare, the conference player of the week last week has been on fire at the plate. Over his last 10 games the senior is hitting .526 (20-38) with five doubles, two triples and one homerun. He has driven in 14 runs and scored 16. Polcare is a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts, with a slugging percentage of .842 and an on base percentage of .581 over that span.

Castleton will take on Middlebury College on Sunday at 1:00 pm next time out. The Spartans have clinched the top-spot in the upcoming NAC tournament for the second-consecutive season.
