Castleton downs U. Maine-Presque Isle 25-4, eyes conference doubleheader

Castleton, VT-Castleton State College scored 14 runs in the third inning, and received five innings of two-hit pitching from Mat Tuthill to cruise to a 25-4 over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in non-conference baseball action.

The Spartans scored six in the first and three in the second before sending 19 men to the plate and scoring 14 in the third inning. Castleton tacked on two more in the fourth before being shut-out over the final two innings of play.

Tuthill allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out five en route to the win.

Seth Dorr walked to lead off the fourth inning, stole second and was doubled home by Jeff Ramsdell to put the 3-15 Owls on the board. Presque Isle put three unearned runs on the board in the top of the seventh as Chuck Reece provided a two-run double.

Castleton received a monster day at the plate from Ted Mills. The first baseman was 4-for-4 with four runs and six RBI before being relieved in the fourth inning. Brad Polcare, Kevin McPeek and Chris Ragis each walked three times, Ragis and McPeek scored four runs apiece while Polcare scored three times.

Billy Bruneau and Dan Conley each went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as Castleton improves to 15-16 overall.

The Spartans will play in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Elms College. Castleton currently is 7-1 in conference play while Elms stands at 5-1.
