Castleton sweeps Maine-Farmington in NAC doubleheader

Farmington, ME-The Castleton State College baseball team has won eight out of its last nine games after sweeping U. Maine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader 6-1 and 5-4.

Game One: Castleton starter, Jeremy Gilcris picked up the complete game win, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run while striking out one and walking one. Gilcris allowed a third inning run as Dan Stefanilo led off with a double into the left-centerfield gap, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Brian Morrison's ground out.

Castleton plated a pair of unearned runs in the second, and put together a four-run sixth inning to seal the win. Chris Ragis doubled and scored in the second, and singled and scored in the sixth to key both rallies.

Mitch Thresher and Anthony DiPietrantonio added run-scoring singles in the sixth.

Game Two: In the night cap, Brad Polcare drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth inning as Castleton came back from a 4-2 defecit to earn the sweep.

Polcare was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases from the lead-off spot.

Brandon Heck picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings and allowing just one earned run on a Corey Provencher solo homerun in the fifth inning that tied the score. Heck settled down and retired the next eight batters he faced to earn the win.

Kevin McPeek was 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Dan Conley chipped in an rbi-single to the win.

Castleton returns to action on Tuesday when the Spartans travel to Lyndon State for a 2:00 pm non-conference doubleheader.
