Box Score Waterville, ME-The Castleton State College baseball team swept a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Thomas College, winning game one 1-0 before exploding for 14 runs in game two and winning 14-0.
Game One: Sophomore starter, Ken Cook continued his recent run of success, tossing a complete-game shut-out to earn the 1-0 win. Cook allowed just three hits, while striking out nine and walking two to earn his third win on the season. The righthander is 3-0 in his last three starts, allowing just one earned run and 14 hits over his last 22 innings pitched.
The Spartans gave Cook all the support he needed in the bottom of the sixth when Anthony DiPietrantonio led off with a single and moved to second on Lauck Blake's ground out to third base. After Brad Polcare moved DiPietrantonio along with a fly-out to right field, Kyle Brooks singled him home for the game-winner.
Thomas College starting pitcher, Andrew Martin, threw all seven innings, allowing one earned on four hits while striking out seven in taking the loss.
Game Two: The Castleton bats exploded four 14 runs, and Rob Turner turned in five innings of shut-out pitching to earn his second-straight win as the Spartans cruised to the doubleheader sweep.
Turner allowed three hits and struck out a pair before giving way to Mitch Thresher who struck out three in two innings of relief.
The Spartans scored in every inning but the sixth, including a five-run fourth inning that broke open a 3-0 game.
Brad Polcare, Dan Conley, Chris Ragis, Ted Mills and Garrett Bissonnette all stroked run-scoring doubles in the fourth inning.
Polcare was a monster at the dish all day, going 4-for-5 from the lead off spot with three doubles and a two-run homerun. The senior second baseman drove in four runs and scored three as the Spartans improved to 11-14 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Conley collected three hits and drove in three as the Spartans collected 18 hits in the night cap. Ted Mills continues to swing a hot bat, as the sophomore first baseman went 5-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
