Box Score

Castleton, VT-Castleton State College scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but came up just short as Williams College won a 10-9 non-conference baseball match-up.

Both teams played even through three innings, but the Ephs sent 10 men to the plate in a seven-run fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. Max Pinto stroked a two-out, run-scoring double and scored on Robin Allemand's rbi-single to cap the rally.

Castleton grabbed a pair of runs in the sixth as Brad Polcare and Kyle Brooks doubled and singled respectively to start the inning. Polcare would later score on a wild pitch, and Brooks on Chris Ragis's rbi-ground out.

Brooks added a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-5, but Williams answered with two more runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by James DiCosomo to make it 10-5.

In the bottom of the ninth Castleton rallied for four runs (two earned), but it was not enough as Williams held on for the 10-9 win. After yielding a two-run double to Ragis, Paul Burgdorf settled in to retire the next three Spartans in succession to earn the save.

Williams starting pitcher, Wilson Barr went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out four to earn the win. DiCosomo led the 14-9 Ephs, going 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot with two RBI and two runs scored.

Billy O'Donnell took the loss, going four innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out two. Castleton falls to 9-14 with the loss. Kyle Brooks was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Ted Mills added three hits, and Ragis three RBI.

Castleton will travel to Maine for the weekend for a pair of North Atlantic Conference doubleheaders. On Saturday the Spartans square off with Thomas College, and on Sunday will take on U. Maine-Farmington.

Williams returns to NESCAC action this weekend, with a three game set against Hamilton. Game one is Friday at 4:00 pm, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
