Box Score 2 Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College baseball team received two solid pitching performances and swept Becker College in a North Atlantic Conference twin bill. The Spartans won game one 7-1, and took game two 7-4.
Game One: Rob Turner scattered six hits over seven innings earning the 7-1 win. Turner allowed one earned run, struck out four and walked just one in the win.
Becker broke through for a run in the third when Roger Graham stroked a two-out single to centerfield, stole second, and scored on Karrone Stanley's single to right.
It was all Turner would allow, as the junior righty allowed just four base runners over the final four innings.
Castleton took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Brad Polcare drew a two out walk, stole second and moved to third when Kyle Brooks reached on an error. Brooks would steal second and come around to score, along with Polcare on Dan Conley's two-run single.
The Spartans tacked on two more in the fourth on an rbi-double from Ted Mills and an rbi-single from Billy Bruneau. Castleton put together a three-run sixth inning, with Anthony DiPietrantonio delivering a two-run single with the bases loaded. Polcare also added an rbi-single in the inning.
Mills had a 3-for-3 afternoon and Bruneau had a two-hit performance.
Jason Allan took the loss, going five and one-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out one. Catcher, Geoff Sinnott and third baseman Jim Ceglarek each stroked a pair of hits for Becker in the loss.
Game Two: Ken Cook went the distance on the mound, as Castleton improved to 7-13 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Cook allowed four runs (one earned) in the fourth inning, scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out six in the win.
Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Brad Polcare and Dan Conley each scored after drawing walks. Polcare stole second, and after Conley walked was brought around on a Ted Mills rbi-single. Chris Ragis brought Conley home from third on a fielder's choice.
The Spartans picked up three more in the third on an rbi-fielder's choice from Conley, an rbi-double from Mills and an rbi-single from Ragis.
Becker cut the lead to 5-4 with a four-run fourth inning. Kevin Robinson started the inning with a double and was followed by a Geoff Sinnott single. Jim Ceglarek provided an rbi-single, after an error and a strikeout, Ryan Mercado roped a two-run double to cut it to 5-3. An rbi-ground out provided the final run of the inning, as Cook settled in and faced just two batters over the minimum for the final three innings.
Castleton tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning on an two-run double by Lauck Blake.
Mills once again led the way with two hits, two rbi and one run scored for Castleton.
Becker falls to 3-16 (0-6 NAC) with the two losses.
Castleton returns to action on Tuesday at 2:00 pm, when the Spartans play host to Norwich University in a non-conference double dip. Becker takes on Rivier on Tuesday at Worcester Polytechnic, first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm.
