Box Score Phoenix, AZ-The Castleton State College baseball team opened its spring break with its first win of the season, 15-10 over Oberlin. With the win Castleton improves to 1-7 with five games remaining at the Phoenix Invitational.
Castleton jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four innings before Oberlin answered with five in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to even the score. The Spartans took advantage of some shaky defense in the eighth, plating seven unearned runs to grab the win.
Garrett Bissonnette got things started in the four-run first inning with a solo homerun, followed by a Dan Conley triple and doubles by Kyle Brooks and Chris Ragis, and a Kevin McPeek single.
The Spartans struck for three more in the third as Brooks Ragis and McPeek all singled to load the bases. Anthony DiPietrantonio smacked a two-run single, and Lauck Blake reached on an RBI-fielders choice.
Starting pitcher, Rob Turner cruised through his first four innings of work, facing just one batter over the minimum. He ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing five runs before getting out of the jam with a strikeout. Turner took the no-decision last five innings, allowing five earned while striking out five.
Ragis and DiPietrantonio each had three hits to lead the offense. Ragis added one RBI and two runs, while DiPietrantonio had two RBI and one run scored. Bissonnette collected 3 RBI and scored twice on a homerun and double.
Billy Bruneau picked up the win in relief, going 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two.
