BOSTON, MA – Senior forward Katherine Wall scored a pair of short-handed goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Castleton State College, 5-1, today in the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference East Tournament at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 14-11-0 on the season and advance to the semi-finals of the ECAC Tournament for the third straight season, while the Spartans fall to 5-16-4.
Wall's first short-handed tally came when she potted a rebound off a shot from senior forward Lauren O'Connor at 17:40 of the first period to give UMass Boston a 2-0 lead. Her second goal was her fourth of the season and capped the scoring when O'Connor fed her with just 1:53 left in the contest to give the Beacons a 5-1 advantage.
Sophomore forward Sandy Parlato opened the scoring for UMass Boston when junior forward Maria Guanci and freshman forward Kristine Faffley combined to find her for her eighth goal of the year at 15:02 of the opening period for a 1-0 edge.
Sophomore forward Kim Davidge and Guanci set up senior defenseman Rose Devlin on the power play for her fourth goal of the season at 11:11 of the second period for a 3-0 UMB lead and sophomore forward Maria Nasta later lifted a shot that found the back of the net for an unassisted goal at the 15:28 mark of the middle period for a 4-0 UMass Boston margin.
Sophomore forward Nicole Adams put Castleton on the board when she took a feed from junior blueliner Kayla Twigge and flicked a shot that snuck just under the cross bar and ricocheted over the goal line on the power play for her fifth score of the season at 12:30 of the final period to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Junior goalie Jessica Sams made 23 to earn the victory for the Beacons, while junior Kalla Robb stopped 45 shots for the Spartans.
UMass Boston will meet the winner of third-seeded New England College and number six seed University of Southern Maine on Saturday, March 8 at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, NY in the semifinals, which will be hosted by top-seeded Manhattanville College.
